Celestia Add-Ons is open!
I've noticed recently that many Celestia developers and contributors have problems concerning the publicity of their creations. Many lack a suitable web space, others don't have time to maintain it...
While being rather busy, myself, I've decided to create a repository of Celestia add-ons. With a central repository, all Celestia related creations will be easily retrieved, contrary to the current situation, in which everything is announced at Celestia Forum but message traffic quickly disperses the information.
I will be accepting submissions, both of actual packages (ZIP files preferred, no longer than 5 MB) and of links to already published add-ons. Please include them in e-mail attachments to i.rivera@wanadoo.es, together with:
- A short description of the add-on, with installation instructions (if a ZIP file is sent, it should include a README with that information).
- Your e-mail address (I won't provide support for add-ons not by myself, and I'll be forwarding any e-mail I receive concerning errors/suggestions/praise to the actual author).
- Copyright information, included possible copyrights for derived works, fragments...
The first add-on is already here... Come add your own!

Celestia 1.2.2/3 is out!
Celestia 1.2.2/3 is out, both its Unix (1.2.2) and Windows (1.2.3, mostly a bug-fix release) versions. Go download it from here.
Celestia 1.2.2/3 features many improvements. Among them:
- Eclipse rendering: now you can see moon shadows over any planet surface when an eclipse is due.
- New high resolution textures: you can select them with SHIFT+R (use R to select low resolution, useful for older graphics card owners). The new Earth is gorgeous!
- More accurate orbit calculations.
- Ability to render semi-transparent 3d meshes (are nebulas way far off?)
My personal experience (on Linux) has been very good, with faster operation (even with high resolution textures). There are some bugs (and some of them very apparent), but this new version is a huge improvement and a definite step towards our dream's space simulator.
By the way, the textures featured in this page are included now with the standard distribution; they are left here for backup purposes...
